Common Questions
How do I know which cryo-EM method is right for my project?
It depends on the goals of your project, the physical nature of your sample, and the level of structural details you require. During your consultation we’ll help you choose the most efficient and informative approach. Visit our Resources page to get more in-depth information regarding the services we offer and how to choose the right one.
Do I need to know how to use an electron microscope?
No. We provide training and support during each step of the process. Alternatively, you can submit samples for staff to screen and/or collect data. Please review our assisted and non-assisted pricing guide before choosing the hands-off option.
How long does a typical cryo-EM project take?
It varies widely. Some samples behave well on the first try, but most require multiple rounds of optimization. Expect an iterative process.
Who can use the cryo-EM facility?
Researchers from MSU and external institutions are welcome. MSU users can be trained for independent facility use. We support users at all experience levels. (Services) All users and their principal investigators are required to submit a user agreement prior to the start of your first project. Once you are ready to discuss your new project, submit a new project form, and facility staff will reach out to schedule your initial consultation. (Forms)
